Unit 9 : Lights, camera, action!

What is a causative verb?

Causative verbs show that the subject of the sentence instigated (caused) an action, but didn’t perform it; the action was done for them by someone else.

Example:
I checked the pipes. → I did this myself
had the plumber check the pipes. → I told/asked the plumber to do this for me

The causative verbs in English are have and get, and there are a few different ways we can use them.

Read on to learn the different causative structures with have and get, then practise everything in the free exercise.

have/get something done

In the passive, the above structure becomes: have something done: have + object + past participle.

Usually, the agent is omitted and the focus is on the service provided.

Example:
We had the plumber check the pipes. (active)
We had our pipes checked(passive)

If we want to introduce the agent, we use by.

Example:
We had our pipes checked by the plumber.

We can also use get in place of have in this form, although this is more informal.

Example:
We got our pipes checked.

Second Conditionalsimple past + would

The second conditional is used to imagine present or future situations that are impossible or unlikely in reality.

Examples:
If I were you, I would start practising.
If she won the lottery, she would buy a luxury mansion.

  • Direct question: What is he doing?
Indirect question: Do you know what he is doing?
  • Direct question: Where have they been?
Indirect question: I wonder where they have been?
  • 2. If the direct question contains the auxiliary DO, we omit it in the indirect question.
    • Direct question: What do you want? Indirect question: Can you tell me what you want?
    • Direct question: When did she leave?
Indirect question: Do you know when she left?

GRAMMAR

PRESENT PASSIVE

We use the Present Simple to express the idea that an action is repeated or usual. The action can be a habit, a hobby, a daily event or something that often happens.

In passive voice, we focus attention on the person or thing affected by the action, when the subject is unknown, unclear or irrelevant.

Let’s compare active and passive structures in Present Simple.

The Present Simple Active is formed like this:

[subject] + base form of the verb (in third person singular, we add ‘-s’ to the verb)

To make statements with the Present Simple Passive, use:

am/is/are + the Past Participle form of the verb

Note: We use ‘am‘ for first person singular (I), ‘is‘ for third person singular and ‘are‘ for second singular and plural nouns and pronouns.

SingularPlural
am visited
You are visited
He/she/it is visited
We are visited
You are visited
They are visited
  • Glass is made from sand.
  • English is spoken all over the world.      AFFIRMATIVE
  • Spanish is not spoken in China.                       NEGATIVE
  • His words aren’t relied on.
